From ages 3-6 years, children are becoming aware of the basic emotions of happy, sad, angry, safe, scared and surprised. When you help them understand their own feelings, it gives them a sense of what’s going on around them. When you build on emotional vocabulary it also gives them a chance to practise managing their emotions gradually.

With these set of 8 hand painted stones, I have included the basic emotions along with one for ‘safe’ and 2 character stones. This gives children the chance to either make up a story or re-enact a situation in a safe way, where they can also further explore what certain emotions mean to them.

Ideas for using the stones:

1. Go through each of the emotion stones so children understand them (show
them the written word underneath, which also helps with literacy).
2. Take it in turns to pick a stone and talk about the last time you felt that
emotion. How did you feel?
3. Choose a stone and talk about what you would do if one of your friends felt
this way. What would you do?
4. Use some toys and give them each an emotion stone. Make up a scenario
and talk to the toys who are feeling that emotion. This helps children
respond to other people.
5. Let children explore all the stones and the gnome characters, let them lead
the game and ask them what you can do?

There are many benefits to child led play and one is that it gives them the opportunity to explore, understand and let out emotions in a calm way.
