Emotion Flash Cards Summary
These 12 x emotions flash cards are an ideal tool for children to help develop a deeper understanding about different emotions. They can be used in a variety of different ways, from communication tools or for identifying different emotions to help with emotional literacy.
When emotions are named, then children can express how they feel before learning how to manage the bigger emotions. Perfect for using within the home, educational settings or play therapy sessions to help foster communication and emotional intelligence.
Listed below are a few suggestions of how the cards could be used:
- Choose a card and take turns recalling a memory when you/child felt that emotion.
- Let children take a card to say how they might be feeling (morning/afternoon/evening).
- While reading a story, ask if they can pick out a certain card to match how someone might be feeling.
- Turn the cards upside down, then take it in turns to choose one and ‘act’ that emotion. Can they guess that emotion?
- Use a selection of toys and give them each an emotion card. To help with empathy, ask children what they would ask and say to help them feel better.
- Can they name and give a reason they felt that emotion (eg. Last week I felt sad when my friend would not play with me).
- Have your child choose a card and see if they can draw what they think that emotion might look like (or use the emotions workbook which discusses ways to support through the larger feelings).
- Choose 2 or 3 cards and create a story incorporating them all (either writing or verbalising).
- Allow some time for child-led play while children explore the emotions and make up stories (sparking their imagination and creativity skills).
- Buy a set of 2 at a discounted rate and use for a matching game or pairs.
